For workers to be committed and productive, the cake must be shared fairly.

COMMENT Leadership is of two kinds. Either the leadership is effective or the followers must be effective. Shed the feudal and tribal mindset. If there’s no leader, no leadership and/or the leader/leadership is not effective, the followers must be effective.

Being effective means delivering the goods as per vision, mission, objectives, goals and actives (vimoga). There  must be a motto and thesis statement.

Management is all about being efficient in getting work out of people in line with vimoga, motto and thesis statement.

Management is at three levels viz. senior, middle and line (or lower).

Senior management work on strategies (how to win); middle managers work on tactics and line managers work on activities.

The supervisors look after the subordinates, checking deadlines and specifications, monitoring, and conducting spot checks.

The managers also monitor and conduct spot checks, and check against deadlines and specifications.

Management is a form of service to the workers.

It’s not enough for managers to be armed with authority from the top and jurisdiction.

They must have power and for that they must obtain the mandate of power (over the workers) from the workers.

The workers will not recognise the management and accept it if it does not serve them.

For workers to be committed and productive, the cake must be shared fairly.
